Five lovely walks around Kirkcudbright
One of the pleasures of staying in Kirkcudbright is being able to head out for a walk and find yourself beside a river, in a quiet wood or looking out across the coast. We’ve picked five local favourites for you to enjoy, whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a longer day outdoors. Download a route before you set off, and ask us if you’d like a hand choosing where to go.
Along the River Dee
This delightful walk follows the River Dee, starting and finishing at the Selkirk Arms. It’s a lovely way to explore the countryside around town without needing to drive anywhere first. The path can be muddy after rain, so bring walking boots or wellies if it’s been wet.

Torrs Point
If you’re in the mood for sea air, try this flat walk out of Kirkcudbright and back. It takes you past the RNLI lifeboat station and offers some beautiful coastal views along the way.

Barhill Wood
There’s a wee climb out of town to reach Barhill Wood, but once you’re there, you can enjoy a gentler wander through the woods we know as the red squirrel woods. Walking shoes or boots are a good idea for this one.

Balcary to Rascarrel
For dramatic coastal scenery, follow the shore and cliffs between Balcary and Rascarrel. Take your time and keep an eye out for the birdlife along the way. You will need to drive to this one but it's well worth it for the stunning coastal scenery. It takes about 20 minutes and you turn off to the right just after the village of Auchencairn.

Cally Woods
You could happily spend hours exploring these beautiful old woods beside the Cally Palace Hotel and golf course. Choose from trails of approximately two, three or five miles, depending on how far you’d like to wander. Good boots are recommended. Here you'll need to drive into Gatehouse of Fleet and turn down the Cally Palace drive, just on the left 100m after the drive starts you'll see a car park where the walk starts.

However far you walk, there’s something rather nice about coming back to the Selkirk Arms, putting your feet up and deciding what to have for dinner. We hope these routes help you discover a little more of the beautiful country around Kirkcudbright.
