There’s more than one way to discover the spirit of Dumfries and Galloway. From a gin distillery here in Kirkcudbright to historic whisky makers further afield, these four visits make excellent outings from the Selkirk Arms. Travel times are approximate, so check your route and book your tour before setting off.

## Dark Art Distillery, Kirkcudbright

**Around 10 minutes on foot**

Start close to home at [Dark Art Distillery](https://darkartdistillery.com/tours?ref=explore-galloway-with-the-selkirk-arms-hotel.ghost.io), right here in Kirkcudbright. Its **Sky Garden Gin** takes inspiration from Galloway’s dark skies, while **UnderStory Gin** evokes the woodland of Galloway Forest Park. The distillery also makes **Merrick Vodka** and **Véspero**, its range of agave spirits.

On a guided visit, you can see the still, learn how the spirits are made and finish with a tasting. It’s an easy choice if you’d like to leave the car at the hotel.

## Galloway Distillery, Newton Stewart

**Around 35–40 minutes by car**

Formerly known as Crafty Distillery, [Galloway Distillery](https://gallowaydistillery.com/pages/visit?ref=explore-galloway-with-the-selkirk-arms-hotel.ghost.io) has entered a new chapter with *Outlander* actor Sam Heughan and his business partner Alex Norouzi. It’s home to the locally rooted **Hills & Harbour** range as well as Heughan’s **Sassenach** spirits.

The standard tour takes you behind the scenes and includes a guided tasting from both collections. Whisky enthusiasts can also enquire about a more detailed tour exploring the distillery’s developing whisky production.

## Bladnoch Distillery, near Wigtown

**Around 45 minutes by car**

For a taste of Lowland whisky history, head west to [Bladnoch Distillery](https://www.bladnoch.com/pages/visit-bladnoch-distillery?ref=explore-galloway-with-the-selkirk-arms-hotel.ghost.io). The distillery has more than 200 years of history and produces **Bladnoch single malt** alongside **Pure Scot blended whisky**.

A classic tour follows the whisky-making process and ends with a tasting. There’s also a café, making this a pleasant outing to combine with a wander around nearby Wigtown.

## Annandale Distillery, near Annan

**Around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes by car**

The furthest of our four suggestions, [Annandale Distillery](https://www.annandaledistillery.com/tours/?ref=explore-galloway-with-the-selkirk-arms-hotel.ghost.io) is well worth making a day of. Its single malts have two distinct characters: **Man O’Words** is unpeated, while **Man O’Sword** offers a smoky, peated style.

Choose from a classic tasting tour or a longer visit exploring the distillery’s history, which dates back to 1836\. The Maltings Coffee Shop offers a place to pause before the journey back to Kirkcudbright.

Whether you’re devoted to single malt, curious about gin or simply enjoy seeing how local makers work, there’s plenty to explore within reach of the Selkirk Arms. Book ahead, and if you’re driving, ask about taking your tasting samples away to enjoy later.
