Six Great Cycle Rides from Kirkcudbright
From a 12-mile leg-stretcher to a 55-mile Galloway adventure
There are plenty of reasons to bring your bike to Kirkcudbright.
Quiet country roads, rolling farmland, forests, lochs, tiny villages and glimpses of the Solway appear around almost every corner. Traffic disappears surprisingly quickly once you're out of town and there is always another little road tempting you to find out where it goes.
There is, however, something we should probably mention.
Galloway isn't flat.
The hills aren't enormous, but they keep coming. That's part of the fun — and it makes the cold drink at the end of the ride taste considerably better.
These six routes aren't something we've simply found on the internet. We've ridden them ourselves. They all start and finish in Kirkcudbright and range from a quick 12-mile spin to a 55-mile day out.
So fill the bottles, check the weather, pump up the tyres and choose your adventure.

🚴 1. The Kirkcudbright Country Loop
12.07 miles / 19.4 km
Best for: A short morning or evening spin
Route: Circular
Start & finish: Kirkcudbright
Terrain: Road
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
This is our shortest ride and a great introduction to cycling around Kirkcudbright.
Within minutes of leaving town you're out amongst the farms and rolling countryside, with very little to suggest you're only a few miles from civilisation.
The first few miles are relatively gentle before the road begins to climb. Nothing terrifying, but enough to remind the legs that you've brought a bicycle to Galloway rather than Norfolk.
The middle section stays on higher, rolling ground before the road gradually gives back all the height you've earned and brings you down towards Kirkcudbright.
At just over 12 miles, it's an ideal arrival-day ride. Check into the hotel, unpack the bike and stretch the legs before dinner.
Chris's tip: Don't be fooled by the distance. There's enough climbing in the middle to make it feel like a proper ride.

🚴 2. The Solway Explorer
14.63 miles / 23.5 km
Best for: A scenic couple of hours
Route: Circular
Start & finish: Kirkcudbright
Terrain: Road
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
This is another relatively short ride, but one that packs plenty of Galloway into fewer than 15 miles.
It's exactly the sort of route we love: small roads, open countryside, changing views and enough undulation to keep things interesting without turning the outing into an expedition.
It's a good choice if you've got a free morning before heading off to explore Kirkcudbright or want a ride before a leisurely lunch.
There's no need to race it. Stop, look around and enjoy being somewhere where a traffic jam can consist of a tractor and half a dozen sheep.
Chris's tip: One for enjoying rather than chasing your average speed. Take your time and enjoy the views.

🚴 3. Kippford & the Solway Coast
33.24 miles / 53.5 km
Best for: A proper morning on the bike
Route: Circular
Start & finish: Kirkcudbright
Terrain: Road
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Now we're getting serious.
At just over 33 miles, this is a cracking Galloway ride combining countryside, climbing and the beautiful coastal area around Kippford and the Solway.
The route heads away from Kirkcudbright through increasingly rural country before working its way towards the Solway coast.
There are some decent climbs along the way, but you're rewarded with constantly changing scenery and some wonderful stretches of road.
Kippford makes this one particularly attractive. The little sailing village sits on the estuary of the River Urr and is exactly the sort of place where the temptation to stop for a while can overcome any plans for a record average speed.
This is a ride to give yourself time for. Allow a good half day, particularly if you're planning a refreshment stop along the way.
Chris's tip: Save something for the second half. There is more climbing after the coast and those innocent-looking Galloway roads have a habit of finding another hill.

🚴 4. The Borgue Loop
14.46 miles / 23.3 km
Best for: A classic short Kirkcudbright ride
Route: Circular
Start & finish: Kirkcudbright
Via: Borgue
Terrain: Road
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
If you're only going to squeeze in one shorter ride while you're here, the Borgue Loop is a very good candidate.
From Kirkcudbright the route heads towards the small village of Borgue before looping through the surrounding countryside and eventually bringing you back towards the River Dee and Kirkcudbright.
The opening miles are relatively kind before the road gradually starts gaining height. The middle of the ride provides most of the climbing, after which you've got the pleasant knowledge that much of the journey home is heading in the right direction — downwards.
It's long enough to feel you've been somewhere, but short enough that it doesn't take over your entire day.
Chris's tip: Don't attack the early miles simply because they feel easy. There's enough climbing in the middle to warm the legs properly.

🚴 5. The Big Galloway Day Out
55.26 miles / 88.9 km
Best for: Experienced cyclists wanting a proper day out
Route: Circular
Start & finish: Kirkcudbright
Terrain: Road
Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Right. You've had your breakfast. The weather looks good. You've got all day.
This is the one.
At just over 55 miles, this route heads deep into the Dumfries & Galloway countryside and provides a proper day's cycling.
There isn't one enormous mountain to conquer. Instead, Galloway employs its preferred method of wearing cyclists down — lots of hills.
The elevation profile tells the story. The opening section gets the legs working, the middle keeps them occupied and some of the biggest climbing comes after you've already covered a fair distance.
But that's exactly why it's such a satisfying ride.
This isn't about racing from A to B. It's a chance to spend a day riding through a part of Scotland that remains wonderfully uncrowded.
And eventually the road turns back towards Kirkcudbright.
By then, thoughts may have moved away from scenery and towards considerably more important matters.
Dinner. Beer. Possibly both.
Chris's tip: Eat before you're hungry and drink before you're thirsty. It's a long enough ride for fuelling to matter — and don't underestimate the climbing in the second half.

🚴 6. The Castle Douglas & Solway Loop
29.44 miles / 47.4 km
Best for: A half-day ride with a coffee stop
Route: Circular
Start & finish: Kirkcudbright
Via: Castle Douglas
Terrain: Road
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
This is a lovely middle-distance option when 15 miles isn't quite enough but 55 sounds like a conversation for another day.
The route takes you away from Kirkcudbright and towards Castle Douglas, our local Food Town, before looping back through the countryside towards the Solway side of the region.
Castle Douglas also provides a very convenient excuse to stop.
There are cafés and independent food shops around the town, so nobody can reasonably object to coffee and cake being considered an essential part of the route.
The return gives you another taste of rural Galloway before dropping back towards Kirkcudbright.
At around 29½ miles, it's long enough to justify that cake but short enough to leave plenty of day for doing something else.
Chris's tip: Don't rush through Castle Douglas. Build a coffee stop into the ride and call it carbohydrate replacement therapy.
